Mexico, U.S. Ties Tested; Disagreement over Iraq Could Strain Relationship.

Feb. 8--MEXICO CITY - Mexico's current opposition to military action against Iraq is setting the stage for a possible confrontation with the United States that could further strain bilateral ties, officials and analysts in both countries said Friday.

After Secretary of State Colin Powell's speech at the United Nations this week, Mexico's new foreign minister, Luis Ernesto Derbez, signaled that his government remains unconvinced that war is the only way to disarm Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
