In the time of Lewis and Clark, a food called pemmican was like a modern "power bar" for many American Indians. Because pemmican didn't spoil, Indians carried it with them on long journeys and when food was scarce. On the Lewis and Clark expedition, game (meat from wild animals) was dried over a fire. The dried meat was then pounded into a powder and mixed with fat and wild berries.
