MANNED flight, it emerged this weekend, was pioneered not as is popularly supposed by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina a century ago but by a Yorkshire landed gentleman named Sir George Cayley a full 50 years earlier.

To prove his theory of aerodynamics he sent his coachman up in a kite-shaped glider which skimmed for 423 feet over the Yorkshire Dales before crashing.

The reluctant pilot broke his leg in the experiment and at once gave in his notice, stating that he was hired to drive, not to fly.
