A technology that is the treatment of choice for breaking down kidney stones is now being used by orthopedic surgeons at Westchester Medical Center to treat a common sports injury among runners, walkers and other athletes.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, which has been used since the 1980s to break down kidney stones, is being used to treat patients suffering from heel pain caused by chronic inflammation of the band of tissue extending from the heel to the bail of the foot.
