Virginian Turner Ashby had no military experience before the Civil War, but he quickly became Major General Stonewall Jackson's best-known cavalry leader. The personal courage Ashby displayed in the Shenandoah Valley campaign was admired by both Union and Confederate soldiers. His magnificent horsemanship and daring raids made Ashby the Civil War's first cavalry legend. His major weakness was his lack of skill in gathering information.
