Pristinamycin could be an alternative to the standard regimen of penicillin for treating erysipelas with the advantage of an oral route of administration.

Erysipelas is an acute superficial infection usually affecting the legs and commonly caused by Streptococci. The standard treatment is intravenous penicillin G followed by oral penicillin. French researchers undertook a multicentre, randomised trial of oral pristinamycin versus penicillin involving 289 hospital inpatients with erysipelas.
