Never one to duck a challenge, the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival is taking on a major but difficult masterpiece of English literature -- "Beowulf."
Likely written in the early 8th century A.D., "Beowulf" is the most ancient of known epic poems written in English -- well, Anglo-Saxon to be exact. The epic is not about English knights, but their Germanic ancestors, the Danes and Geats.
Although the poem is extensive, some of it was lost. The only surviving manuscript was damaged in a fire in 1731 that ...
