In a surprise development, dark-horse candidate Mariano Azuela Guitron was elected to a three-year term as the chief justice of Mexico's highest court (Suprema Corte de la Nacion, SCJN). Azuela defeated Juan Silva Meza, who had been widely favored to succeed outgoing chief justice Genaro David Gongora Pimentel. The election was decided in a vote among the 11 SCJN justices.
