George Eliot's work is dominated by the scenes of her childhood - and the towns and villages that turned their backs on her once she chose to live openly with a married man.

Eliot was born Mary Ann Evans in 1819 at a farmhouse within the Arbury Hall estate, just outside Nuneaton.

When she was four-months-old her father Robert, who was a land agent for the Newdegate family who owned Arbury, moved the family to Griff House on the edge of the estate.
