The small world of prewar modernism in Los Angeles was surprisingly rich. During the 1930s, Hideo Date (b. 1907) was one of a group of sophisticated Japanese-American figurative artists who--despite the racism of the times--managed to exhibit work to audiences beyond their own ethnic community. After a year of training in Japan, Date quickly garnered the attention of Stanton MacDonald-Wright, then a teacher at L.A.'s Art Students League and a leading figure on the scene.
