TALLAHASSEE, Fla. _ Gov. Jeb Bush Monday appointed Circuit Judge Kenneth B. Bell of Pensacola, Fla., as the state's newest Supreme Court justice, making Bell the first justice from northwest Florida since 1917.

Bell, a conservative jurist, replaces retiring Justice Leander J. Shaw, Jr., 72, considered the court's most liberal justice.

Bell will be the 81st justice since statehood in 1845, and only the fifth justice to hail from Escambia County, according to Supreme Court spokesman Craig Waters. He also will be the only justice with any trial ...
