For the October 1903 issue of POPULAR MECHANICS, Thomas Alva Edison wrote an article about his research with X-rays and the mysterious rays given off by radium, thorium and uranium. Yes, this is the same Edison who is famous for the phonograph, the motion picture, the incandescent light bulb and hundreds of other inventions. Edison eventually secured more than 1000 patents, yet he never patented his X-ray devices. We still benefit indirectly from the X-ray research and devices he and his laboratory staff produced.
