History of cod and hake recovery plan.

The Commission's cod and hake recovery plan has been on the table since last December with little progress. Member States did not like the twin track approach of cutting fishing effort and total allowable catches (TACs) to stop stocks collapsing. But then pressure to take radical action increased in October when new scientific advice called for an all-out ban on cod, haddock and whiting fishing in the Irish Sea and North Sea. Commissioner Fischler said the only way to avoid a ban was to agree an 80% cut in fishing effort and up to 80% ...
