Primary lymphedema is caused by impaired lymph vessel or lymph node development, and secondary lymphedema results from damage to the lymphatic structures. (1) Women who have had surgical removal of axillary lymph nodes in the treatment of breast cancer are at risk for the development of secondary lymphedema. (2) The prevalence of lymphedema in the population of women treated for breast cancer has been estimated to be 25% to 28% (3) but its prevalence is difficult to determine due to variability in the definition of lymphedema and in the methods of measuring swelling.
