Ho and Yu have studied the effect of burning incense sticks on levels of formaldehyde and other carbonyls in the home and temple environments (ibid 2002, 4,728). The carbonyls were first trapped on a solid adsorbent coated with O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)-hydroxylamine. Comparative samples were taken outside on each occasion. The volatiles were subsequently desorbed and analysed by GC-MS. The results clearly showed that the burning of incense sticks increased the levels of carbonyls present in the environment, typically by 11-23 ...
