Dec. 17--Farmers have been looking for an effective way to control scab since the fungal disease became epidemic in 1993. A new fungicide that could give barley growers good scab control now is undergoing testing and may be available by the 2004 crop year.

Scab is caused by the Fusarium fungus, which produces a toxin, DON, which makes the barley unsuitable for malting. Most malting barley contracts call for a maximum DON level of 1 part per million or 3 parts per million, says Kent McKay, ...
