A FEW YEARS ago I made a walking stick from a sassafras sapling that had been wrapped by honeysuckle. The honeysuckle had squeezed the sapling like a snake, creating a wonderful spiral that ran the entire length of the stick. I cut the sapling, took it home, let it dry for a few months, and then used a pocketknife and a rasp to remove the bark. I used the metal base of a 12-gauge shotgun shell for the tip, and I polished the wood with linseed oil.
