In the gallery of Franz Kafka's correspondents, the (for us) mute recipients of his all-revealing yet all-concealing letters, Hedwig Weller (1888-1953) takes a modest place. If the well-known features of Felice Bauer (1887-1960) and Milena Jesenska (1896-1944) hang at the centre, Max Brod (1884-1968), to whom Kafka wrote for all his adult life, might find himself next to Felice, as it was he who introduced the epistolary lovers. On account of the confidences of Kafka's later years Robert Klopstock (1899-1972) might flank Milena, and next to him perhaps Minze Eisner (1901-1972), ...
