In August 2002, two teams of four people started out simultaneously from the Mexican and Canadian borders on a two-month journey with the goal of meeting in the middle of the United States while traveling on public lands the entire way, a distance of more than 2,600 miles. Teams traveled via walking, horseback riding, mountain bikes, ATVs and off-road motorcycles, canoes, whitewater rafts, motorboats, and four-wheel-drive vehicles. The journey crossed six states, including New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana.
