COMPETITION between governments in north-western Europe to attract American companies has intensified with the arrival of the euro. Belgium, a long-time beneficiary of American direct investment (USDI), is now losing out to neighbours, hampered by its high tax regime and uncertain political climate.

A study by the American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium last week showed that American investment in the country is declining relative to its European Union rivals.
