As I researched Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine, 1845-1850, the question that haunted me first was, Who are the heroes of the Famine? Are the heroes the political leaders, public servants, individuals, and charitable groups who worked hard to provide relief for the starving Irish but who could not prevent a huge loss of life? Or are there stories of agency, activism, and heroism among the suffering Irish people themselves?
