Customers were overcharged as much as $16.50 on toys by checkout scanners at some Wisconsin stores, according to a report state officials released Wednesday that served as a warning to holiday shoppers.

The statewide survey by inspectors with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection found that 21 of 59 stores checked Nov. 11 and 12 had an error rate on toy prices of more than 2 percent. The error rate includes both overcharges and undercharges, officials said.

The average error was a 30-cent undercharge. ...
