The title of "Why a Painting Is Like a Pizza: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Modern Art" (Princeton University Press: $29.95) says just about everything.

It explains why modern art delights and fascinates many and it explains why modern art irritates others.

The author, Nancy Heller, is professor of art history at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. The book is her attempt to make modern art comprehensible. Actually, she does a pretty good job.
