In the mid-1990s, a pair of restless 20-somethings working in the Cartoon Network's video library took to watching long-forgotten cartoons with the volume turned down. The challenge of thinking up new dialogue for the old animation helped pass the time. "The fact that we couldn't change any of the video put us in a box," says Matt Thompson, who later started a production company with coworker Adam Reed. "And we had to write our way out of it."
