STEAMBOAT SPRINGS -- Steamboat Treasures & Tees owner Leon Rinck could hardly conceal his excitement last spring when it appeared American Skiing Co. would leave this bustling resort town and never come back.

But today, as the celebrated Steamboat Ski Resort prepares for another season, Rinck and other business owners and residents are learning to live with what for many is an unsettling reality: The resort owner they abhor is still around.
