For Swedes, Saint Lucia's Day on December 13 signals the start of the exciting monthlong Christmas season. And for girls chosen to be a Lucia, it is one of the most exciting days of their lives.
Like many other Swedish festivals, Saint Lucia's Day, also known as the Festival of Light, has religious origins. Lucia lived in the latter part of the third century. Born into a wealthy Sicilian family, she never married. Instead, she devoted her entire life to God.
