THIS IS THE STORY of a sculpture and a song. It is also a story about a Viennese lady, and it extends from Vienna to the northern suburbs of Sydney.
The sculpture, or at least a copy of it, which faces me across my desk as I write, depicts Irene Hellmann, a cultured lady who moved in the artistic circles of Austria between the two world wars. Her sculpture was created some time in the early 1920s, when she was around forty years old. The sculptor was Ambrosi, a prominent Austrian artist, and the work was commissioned by Irene's husband Paul. The sculpture was to be ...
