Holding the key positions of First Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, Abdullah is chairman of the Supreme Economic Council (SEC) and of a Royal Family Council of 18 senior princes which he set up in June 2000. In his capacity as day-to-day ruler, Abdullah does directly address oil and gas related issues facing the kingdom. But here Abdullah is less able to act on his own initiative. Co-ordination with the other full-brothers of King Fahd, led by Prince Sultan, is a necessity.
