AMINO-ACID NEUROTRANSMITTERS play an important role in a variety of physiological functions. These include actions related to higher integrative functioning of the brain (e.g., emotions and behavior), thermoregulation and hypothalamic-hypophysial interactions, as well as cardiovascular and respiratory functioning. Whereas many of the same areas are affected by alcohol withdrawal, the role of amino-acid neurotransmitters and the levels of activity of their metabolic enzymes have not been fully studied during abstinence syndromes.
