* In June 1950, Americans cheered when they heard that Gen. Douglas MacArthur (right) would command U.N. forces in South Korea. MacArthur was a great military hero.

* In World War II, MacArthur received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his defense and recapture of the Philippines from Japanese forces. The North Korean invasion, however, presented MacArthur with perhaps his greatest military challenge.
