Raisin bread is probably a happy accident. The Egyptians are credited with figuring out how to make dough rise, although it was probably just by chance that wild yeast spores floated into that first batch of dough. Raisins, too, were probably discovered accidentally, when nomadic hunter-gatherers decided to sample the grapes that had dried on the vine.
Raisins originated in the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, Turkey, West Asia, and Afghanistan. And although all these regions still produce raisins, the world's leading producer is now California.
