Bert Tonkin and Mike Dean, who recently celebrated their gift shows' 50th year in San Francisco and 60th year in Seattle, had the right chemistry from the beginning. The credit for startup, however, belongs to Tonkin's aunt, Kay Leber. This legendary gift industry lady with vision traveled the sales circuit as a Norcross greeting card rep until 1930, when she decided it was a better idea to bring the buyers to the reps. So, she launched her first trade show in Seattle with 15 exhibitors. She also convinced Tonkin, in 1953, to give up his plans to become a buyer of furniture ...
