With an area of 488,100 sq km and a population of about 4.9 million, Turkmenistan has huge natural resources, including the world's third or fourth reserves of natural gas and considerable oil. There is a wide range of minerals to produce chemicals.
The world's third largest deposits of sulphur are found in the Kara Kum desert, a land mass covering about 80% of the country.
