Tranquilizers Increase Risk of Hip Fractures
The risk of hip fractures can be greatly reduced by eliminating or changing the type of tranquilizers commonly prescribed for older people, according to a recent study. An estiamted 200,000 hip fractures occur in people over 65 each year.
The report reveals that users of the minor tranquilizers which stayed in the body for 24 hours or longer had a 70 percent greater risk of hip fracture than persons not using any psychotropic drug. Shorter-acting tranquilizers (those staying in the body less than 24 hours) were ...
