Toronto Operetta Theatre gave Gilbert and Sullivan's 19th-century operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, an excellent stylistic production, staying true both to the period and sensibility of the material. In fact, it was one of TOT's best offerings to date. Director Guillermo Silva-Marin restrained his usual buffo urges to create attractive stage business that enhanced the action, while Derek Bate conducted a crackerjack little six-instrument ensemble that proved chamber G&S can be very effective.
