IN 1925 Julien Benda wrote a startling book, La Trahison des Clercs (The Treason of the Clerks), which still reverberates a warning to the French intellectual class of the treachery of abandoning its role as custodian of learning and culture; of the cost of placing its gifts at the service of a political movement-particularly one which might destroy the very values the intellectuals are supposed to defend. Benda used the word "clerk" in the medieval sense to mean the educated class.
