Oct. 2--Mary McWilliams was just warming up to her job as a consumer educator at a fledging health maintenance organization in Colorado when a marketing position came up.

The HMO's president looked around and asked McWilliams, then 23, if she wanted to become marketing director. Not quite sure what the job entailed, McWilliams nodded yes.
