CINCINNATI -- Rufus and Ruby, The Bears with Diabetes, will travel aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes, which affects over 1 million Americans. The shuttle, flight STS-112, is scheduled for take-off on October 2, 2002 from the Kennedy Space Center between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. EST.

First designed in 1996 by Chicago-area mom Carol Cramer for her son Brian when he was diagnosed with type 1, or juvenile, diabetes two years prior, these teddy bears have patches sewn onto them to help children learn about the spots on their bodies ...
