IN 1915, from the Somme, Edmund Blunden sent his mother a cheque for [British Pound]5. He asked her to send him razor blades, socks, a toothbrush, envelopes and a couple of poetry books. With the rest of the money she was to give his sister a present and to have a good night out at the theatre-she could keep the change. Those were the days. In fact, for Blunden, they were both the worst and the best days of his life.
