THE CATHEDRAL OF OUR Lady of the Angels, which was dedicated by Cardinal Roger Mahony on September 2, is one of the most confounding great buildings built in Los Angeles in decades. A yawning hangar, the boxy new basilica shows few outward signs of being the pivot of Catholicism in Southern California. The inspired inside, a genuine work of art, is a tabernacle that nevertheless has the qualities of a Buddhist temple. The outside is heavy, the inside unburdened.
