AMONG many strengths, Charles de Gaulle had the knack of hanging on. Twice he seemed beaten and alone, only to outstay his opponents and return in triumph. Great as it was, his career had the improbability of an adventure comic. The comparison would not have shocked the General. According to his friend, Andre Malraux, he himself once boasted that My only rival, in the end, is Tintin."
