The search for clues as to why certain children seem to be plagued with ear infections and others are spared continues. Doctors at the Rambam Medical Center, Haifa, Israel, wondered about the relationship between anemia and ear infections.

In order to explore this possible relationship, they collected data on 680 children with frequent episodes of ear infections and 200 children who didn't. They measured the hematocrit of all these children. (The hematocrit is a test for anemia.) They found that the lower the hematocrit, ...
