A product liability lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in Eugene claims that wired glass is unsafe and regulators are negligent for not recognizing the risk posed by the material - panes that enclose a wire mesh to prevent shattering during a fire.

The lawsuit, filed by 22-year-old Jarred Abel of Eugene, names as defendants two wired glass makers - Northwestern Industries Inc. and Central Glass Co. - and the American National Standards Institute and the institute's committee overseeing glass standards and testing.
