The famous Khyber Pass cuts through low craggy mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and is controlled by Pakistan. At its highest point, it is 3,500 feet above sea level. The Khyber Rifles, an elite paramilitary unit of the Pakistani Army, guards the pass.

Historically, the Khyber Pass has been a door for invaders. Alexander the Great, born in the mid-300s B.C., used it to invade India. So did later armies of Muslims, Mongols and Afghans.
