In areas of the country that produce large numbers of broilers, a common problem is the disposal of litter. The majority of broiler litter is applied to pastures and croplands as fertilizer, but it can also be included as a protein or nitrogen source in ruminant diets.

Some broiler producers have begun adding aluminum sulfate, commonly referred to as alum, to the bedding material in broiler houses to reduce ammonia volatilization and soluble phosphorus.
