During my college years, I served as a summer life-guard on the beaches of Cape Cod. It was at this time that I first experienced fog while afloat.

A vapor thick as a Midwest blizzard formed around me one morning in early September as I motored a rescue boat from the harbor base to my assigned beach, a two-mile ride. One moment I was zipping along 100 yards off the surf, and the next moment I found myself in a thick cloud, with no idea which way was east or west.
