THE Earth Summit began in Johannesburg yesterday amid controversy about its huge cost and doubts about its end result.

South African President Thabo Mbeki called for an end to the global apartheid dividing rich and poor nations.

Mr Mbeki told thousands of delegates the time had come to end a world order based on the "savage principle" of the survival of the fittest.
