MARQUETTE, IOWA -- You can walk up the bluff along a parade of 13 bear effigies that march toward the sky. You can stand on a nearby bird effigy that looks like its about to soar over the Mississippi River.
But you'll never know exactly what the builders were thinking when they shaped the mounds -- raised earth monuments -- that have lasted more than 800 years.
