With the help of rock-eating fungi, some types of trees are able to "mine" calcium, a nutrient essential to their growth. According to University of Michigan geological sciences professor Joel D. Blum, leader of the team that conducted the study, this finding has implications for forest ecology and management and should help scientists better understand the effects of acid rain on forests.
