Harriet Elam-Thomas nears four decades in U.S. foreign service. (National Report).

One of the few African-American women in the State Department's Senior Foreign Service, Harriet Elam-Thomas has traveled around the world, rose from an international business student to an ambassador, and spent almost 40 years as a diplomat.

Now completing a two-year assignment as the ambassador to Senegal, she will soon decide whether to accept another post or retire to a family home in Florida.
